Back care awareness: working from home, guidance, and posture information.

Back Care, (the National Back Pain Association), is a national charity, set up in 1968, which annually raises awareness of the importance of preventable back injury through Back Care Awareness Week (4th – 8th Oct).

One of their areas of focus for 2021 is on working from home. During the last 18 months many more people have spent a significant amount of time working from their homes, and despite Covid-19 restrictions easing, and some people returning to offices and workplaces, there are still many more people working from home than pre-pandemic. This can, and will, lead to some preventable back issues.

Prevention is better than cure when it comes to backs and we can help ourselves with better knowledge of both how the spine works, and the kind of support it needs. For some this might mean, for example, better or different seating, a rejigged home office set-up or a standing desk; alongside regular breaks, desk exercises, stretches, posture awareness and hydration.

Sadly, back problems can affect anyone, of any age or fitness level and account for a staggering amount of absences from work in all types of jobs and workplaces. Some people experience back problems from too much standing, others too much sitting, others from incorrect lifting or poor posture.

In some jobs, health and safety training in the correct procedures for manual handling and lifting or other job or site-specific procedures can really make the difference in cutting sickness absence due to back problems. So too can relevant and reputable on or offsite first aid training for the workplace. Knowing how to triage a member of staff experiencing back pain can aid recovery times, whether that’s with ice and heat therapy, rest, or referral to specialists.

First Aid for All runs several First Aid training at work courses, and public first aid courses, from basic skills up to advanced three-day courses. Browse the website to find and book a First Aid Training course near you
