For the first two years of running courses we did what almost everybody does: theory in the morning, practical after lunch. Learners were attentive, polite and, when we tested them six weeks later, remarkably vague about what they had actually done.
The change was simple. Nothing is now explained for more than twenty minutes before somebody has to get on the floor and try it. Compressions come before the physiology of cardiac arrest rather than after it. Retention at six weeks roughly doubled, and the feedback forms stopped mentioning the temperature of the room.
